iPlayers Logo The Story Behind iPlayers

In 2002 the concept of www.iplayers.net was born. Originally www.mikehusted.com, it was a personal venture on the part of two fraternity brothers from UVA, Michael Husted and Troy Dohner.

The idea was to create a website showcasing free-agent, NFL veteran PK Michael Husted, so coaches could easily view current game, practice and workout footage. Also, to develop a user friendly interface that allowed them to search footage clip by clip and then break it down frame by frame. In essence, it was a private film room.

It worked; that off-season Michael Husted was flown in for 5 workouts and signed with the Kansas City Chiefs for his ninth and final year in the league. Upon retirement, he thought more about the concept and determined what had worked for him could work for many players on a variety of levels. In 2005, iplayers.net was launched.

Evolution of iPlayers

Today iPlayers has evolved into a library of interactive resumes, searchable by player or position and cross-listed by event, with each event serving as a portfolio of individual resumes representing those players who have participated in the skills competition of that event. Among its many features: detailed video storage, quick search and play function, as well as an innovative video tool bar useful for scouting and instruction.

The drive behind iplayers.net is to develop a new standard for exposing athletes to recruiters because the current methods are inefficient and unpractical. Until now, athletes sent highlight tapes which often never reached the coaches and more often were never viewed by them, much like junk mail. Plus, updating the video became costly and its integrity questioned because typically only the athlete’s best footage was sent.

In contrast, the way an iPlayers skills competition is filmed negates these variables. An athlete is filmed professionally by a third party and all footage is posted, good or bad, allowing the recruiter to make a fair assessment of the prospect. Plus, the footage can be updated quickly and is easily accessible.

iPlayers: Perception vs. Reality

The perception is that you need to attend a National Skills camp to get noticed, be an All-American to receive a scholarship, or play D1 ball to get a shot at the pros.

The reality is, all you need is an opportunity.

Whether it is an opportunity to win a scholarship, attend the school of your choice, or just continue playing. iPlayers provides a vehicle to achieve those goals. Finally, an efficient resource putting athletes on an even playing field, all in one spot where coaches and recruiters can discover them.
